Internet speeds
Time warner has increased my internet speed to 200 mbps. The installed a Arris DG1670A modem. I have a Linksys E1000 router so they did not turn on the router function on the modem. When i have 3 computers. When all 3 are plugged into the Linksys modem i get around 90/20. When i plug them into the new modem i get 233/20 on one computer but the other 2 stay at 90/20. Why am not getting the 200/20 on all 3 computers. Also the wifi speed is about 30 mpbs. Thanks
From my reading, the E1000 router is fairly old and reviews even from 2010 showed that it was not a very powerful router. However, the biggest problem is that the router only has 100 Mbps Ethernet ports. So to be getting 90 Mbps through the router is actually right on part for a router like this (since 100 Mbps is the absolute maximum, allowing for some protocol overhead and inefficiency 90 is pretty good). Your testing confirms that the router is the bottleneck since you can get great throughput by having your devices directly connected to the cable modem. So this is an easy recommendation to get a new router with gigabit Ethernet ports to take advantage of the 200+ Mbps speeds you are getting from your provider. I’ve recently started using the Linksys EA6350, which is selling for under $100 and I have been able to test it with a 200 Mbps connection. It was able to push more than 200 Mbps, so I believe it would suit your needs well. Let us know what you end up getting and how well it works for you.
