Troubleshooting non moving cursor….may need new mouse?

Even though the battery life signaled good battery strength, I did replace with high quality batteries.  It also showed that mouse was paired with bluetooth but I did try deleting and re-pairing the mouse but cursor remains frozen.  I removed for time being and installed a usb mouse and have been using that in the meantime.
Since this is the original mouse that came with my Mac, I’m wondering where I should shop for a new mouse and what do I look for?  My system is at least over 5 years old and I’m sure there have been improvements.
Thank you in advance,
Linda
